Choosing IB Higher and Standard Level Subjects Without Regret

The higher level choice is the most consequential academic decision in the IB Diploma, and it is usually made when a student is sixteen, several months before they have any idea what they want to study at university. It cannot be avoided, but it can be made well. The aim is a set of three higher level subjects that satisfies the requirements of the degree courses your child might realistically pursue, while leaving enough capacity to complete the core and sleep occasionally.

What Higher Level Actually Changes

Higher level subjects carry substantially more teaching hours than standard level, cover additional content, and are assessed against more demanding criteria. The step up is not uniform across subjects; some higher level courses are a modest extension of the standard level material, while others introduce genuinely new territory and a different pace.

For universities, higher level is the level that counts. Offers name higher level subjects and higher level grades. A student with an excellent standard level chemistry grade does not meet a requirement for higher level chemistry, and this cannot be fixed retrospectively. This asymmetry is the reason to treat the higher level decision as a university decision rather than a preference decision.

Working Backwards From Likely Degrees

The reliable method is the same one that works for A-Levels. Identify a spread of degree subjects your child might apply for, look up published entry requirements at several universities, and note which higher level subjects are named. Do this in the term before choices are made.

  • Medicine and dentistry: higher level chemistry is close to universal, usually with biology and often with a specified grade in each.
  • Engineering: higher level mathematics and physics, with mathematics at the more demanding of the two mathematics routes at many universities.
  • Economics: higher level mathematics is required or strongly preferred by a growing number of competitive courses.
  • Computer science: higher level mathematics is the common requirement, more often than computer science itself.
  • Law, history and humanities: rarely prescriptive about subjects, but expect strong essay-based higher levels and a demanding overall total.
  • Architecture and design: portfolios matter, and higher level art or design technology is helpful but not always required.

The Mathematics Decision

The IB offers two mathematics courses, each available at higher and standard level: one oriented towards analysis and proof, and one oriented towards applications and interpretation. They are genuinely different courses, not easier and harder versions of the same thing, and universities distinguish between them. For mathematics-heavy degrees, the analysis route at higher level is usually the expected one, and choosing the applications route can quietly remove a set of courses from consideration.

This is the single choice most worth researching properly, because it is the one where families most often discover the consequence too late. If there is any realistic chance of engineering, economics, physics, mathematics or computer science, check the specific wording of entry requirements at a range of universities before deciding, and ask the school's mathematics department for a frank assessment of your child's readiness.

Workload Realities

Three higher levels, three standard levels, an Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge, internal assessments in every subject and a CAS programme is a serious load for two years. It is manageable for most students who chose sensibly and unmanageable for those who chose aspirationally in every slot.

Two patterns cause most of the difficulty. The first is taking four higher levels because it appears more impressive. It is not more impressive to universities, which read the three they asked for, and it materially raises the risk of a lower total. The second is taking three higher levels that all carry heavy coursework demands peaking in the same term, which turns a difficult period into an impossible one.

  1. Ask the coordinator when the internal assessment deadlines fall for each subject your child is considering.
  2. Map those deadlines against the Extended Essay milestones and the Theory of Knowledge assessments.
  3. Identify any term where three major pieces of work land together, and change one subject if that term looks unsurvivable.
  4. Confirm that each higher level subject is actually taught as a separate class, rather than combined with standard level with extension work set independently.
  5. Ask how many students took each higher level course last year, since a very small class can mean limited teaching resource.
The best higher level combination is the one your child can still be doing well in during the second February, not the one that reads best in September.

Interest Is a Practical Consideration, Not a Sentimental One

Two years is a long time to spend on a subject chosen strategically and disliked genuinely. Higher level courses demand independent reading, sustained coursework and a tolerance for the subject's least appealing corners. A student who finds the subject interesting will absorb that; a student who does not will produce weaker work, and the grade will show it.

Where interest and requirement conflict, the resolution is usually to satisfy the requirement at higher level and place the loved subject at standard level, rather than to abandon either. Standard level still means two years of proper study, and the transcript still shows it.

One last practical note. Schools cannot always offer every combination, because higher level classes must fit the timetable and reach viable numbers. Ask early which combinations the school has successfully run before. If your child's preferred set has never been timetabled, find that out in the spring rather than in September.
