How the IB 45-Point Score Is Built: Six Subjects and Three Core Points

The IB Diploma is scored out of 45, a number most parents know before they know anything else about the programme. What is less widely understood is how that total is assembled, and why the arithmetic shapes almost every decision your child makes over two years. Once you can see where each point comes from, conversations about subject choice, workload and university offers become considerably easier.

Six Subjects, Six Groups

A Diploma student studies six subjects, drawn from six groups covering language and literature, language acquisition, individuals and societies, sciences, mathematics, and the arts. The design intention is breadth: unlike A-Levels, where a student narrows to three subjects, the IB keeps a student working across languages, sciences, mathematics and the humanities until eighteen.

In practice there is a common substitution. A student who does not want to take an arts subject may replace it with a second subject from one of the other groups, most often a second science or a second humanity. Schools differ in what they permit, because the option must exist on their timetable, so this is worth checking early rather than assuming.

Each of the six subjects is graded from 1 to 7, with 7 the highest. Six subjects at 7 gives 42 points. The remaining three come from the core.

Higher Level and Standard Level

Of the six subjects, three are normally taken at higher level and three at standard level. Some students take four at higher level, which is permitted at many schools but adds significant load. Higher level subjects carry more teaching hours and more content, and they are the ones universities look at when a course has subject prerequisites.

Crucially, a 7 at standard level and a 7 at higher level contribute the same number of points to the total. The difference is not in the arithmetic but in how universities read the transcript. An offer for engineering will specify higher level mathematics and physics at particular grades; the standard level subjects are largely invisible to that requirement. This is why the higher level choice is the consequential one.

Where the Three Core Points Come From

The core of the Diploma has three components, and two of them are graded and combined to produce up to three additional points.

  • Theory of Knowledge, a course examining how knowledge is constructed across disciplines, assessed through an essay and an exhibition.
  • The Extended Essay, an independent research piece of around four thousand words written on a topic of the student's choosing under a supervisor.
  • Creativity, Activity, Service, a programme of sustained engagement outside the classroom which is not graded but must be completed satisfactorily.

Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay are each awarded a letter grade. The two grades are read together against a published matrix which determines how many bonus points, from zero up to three, are added to the subject total. A weak performance in both can result in no bonus points at all, and a failing condition in either component can prevent the award of the Diploma regardless of subject grades. Creativity, Activity, Service contributes no points but must be completed; an incomplete programme means no Diploma.

So the total is straightforward: up to 42 points from six subjects, plus up to 3 core points, giving 45.

Why Points Are Not Distributed Evenly Across the Two Years

The score is a two-year accumulation, not a single examination result. A substantial portion of most subjects is assessed internally through coursework completed during the programme and moderated externally. The Extended Essay is written largely in the first year and the early part of the second. The final examinations sit at the end, but by the time they arrive a meaningful part of the total is already determined.

This is the structural difference that most changes how a family should think about the two years. In a linear examination system, a slow start can be recovered with a strong final year. In the IB, coursework deadlines missed early leave a permanent mark on the total, and they cluster in ways that catch students out.

The Diploma rewards students who work steadily and punishes those who work in bursts. That is a matter of design, not of difficulty.

Reading a Predicted Score Sensibly

Universities receive a predicted total alongside predicted grades for each subject, and offers are typically expressed both as an overall points total and as specific higher level grades. A student can meet the total and miss the offer by falling short on a named higher level subject, which is a frequent and painful outcome. When you look at a predicted score, look at the composition rather than the headline number.

  1. Check the predicted grades for the higher level subjects named in the offers your child is pursuing.
  2. Check whether the predicted core points assume a strong Extended Essay that has not yet been written.
  3. Identify the one or two subjects where a single grade movement changes the total most.
  4. Confirm that Creativity, Activity, Service requirements are on track, since they are easy to neglect and cannot be skipped.
  5. Ask the coordinator how the school generates predictions and what evidence would revise one upward.

A final piece of perspective for families comparing systems. The 45-point scale is granular, which means small differences in score look larger than they are. The distance between a strong Diploma and an outstanding one is real, but it is often two or three points, and those points are frequently found in the core rather than in a heroic improvement in a subject. Families who understand the structure tend to look for them in the right place.
